A pair of robbers were caught red-handed from the other side of the world after they held up a pensioner as he chatted to his son on Skype, police said.
South African Roy Hicks, 78, was using the internet phone and video calling service for the first time to talk to his son in New Zealand when the thieves burst into his home near Johannesburg.
The victim's son watched on his webcam screen in horror as the pair tied up his elderly father and demanded he hand over valuables during Friday's terrifying raid
He then immediately called the local police in South Africa to alert them to the robbery.
Police today confirmed one suspected robber had been arrested at the scene of the robbery after officers shot the second man dead during a shootout.
Spokeswoman Annabelle Middleton said officers had been stunned when they realised the robbery was broadcast live on the internet
She said: 'This old man was using Skype for the very first time to speak to his son.
'Just before he sat down at the computer, he opened his front door to let his dog outside and while he was chatting the two thieves entered the house.
'His son could see on screen as they came up behind his dad.
'The robbers knocked the camera down so it was pointing at the keyboard but he could still receive the audio and heard the men tying up his dad and demanding jewellery and cash.
'He called the police station near his father's home and officers went round as quickly as possible.'
Officials said the thieves used electrical tape to tie up their victim and stole a licensed firearm from his safe as well as cash and other items.
The pair then turned the weapon on police officers who arrived at the scene.
Warrant Officer Middleton added: 'The men fired around 15 shots at the officers and one was shot dead during the shootout.
'The other was arrested at the scene and has been charged with house breaking.'
Police today praised the victim's son for his quick-thinking in reporting the crime.
Warrant Officer Middleton said: 'It was magnificent.
'This just shows how new technology can help things.
'Even though he was thousands of miles away, the son saw with his own eyes at the guys entered his dad's home and attacked him.
'He was able to give a full description to the police who quickly arrived at the scene.
'Without Skype it is very unlikely the men would have been caught.'
The surviving alleged robber is expected to appear before magistrates next week following the incident which happened at 10am on Friday in the Lyttleton Manor suburb of Centurion in South Africa's Gauteng province.
