Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard clung to her bodyguard as she was dragged to safety through a crowd of angry protesters in Canberra today.
Riot police formed a shield around the prime minister as they helped her force a path through the protesters who surrounded a restaurant where she was attending an awards ceremony to mark Australia Day.
Miss Gillard stumbled after losing a shoe in the scuffle, but was caught by her personal security guard and managed to get into a waiting car.
The protests appear to have been aimed primarily at opposition leader Tony Abbott, who was also in the building when some 200 demonstrators began banging on its windows, shouting 'shame' and 'racist'.
Mr Abbott had angered activists earlier in the day by saying it was time the nearby Aboriginal Tent Embassy 'moved on'.
The embassy, a ramshackle collection of tents and shelters on the lawn of Parliament House, is at the centre of the campaign for Aboriginal sovereignty and land rights.
Demonstrators had gathered to celebrate its 40th anniversary when they heard that Mr Abbott was nearby.
Miss Gillard and Mr Abbott had been handing out inaugural National Emergency Medals, presented as the country marked Australia Day.
Dozens of extra police were called to the scene and escorted them from the building after 20 minutes.
Australia Day marks the arrival of the first fleet of British colonists in Sydney on January 26, 1788.
Many Aborigines call it Invasion Day because the land was settled without a treaty with traditional owners.
Miss Gillard was unharmed and hosted another Australia Day function at her official residence in Canberra after the incident.

It wasn't the church wedding she had planned but time is not on Heather Taylor's side.
The breast cancer survivor, who is also now battling a brain tumour, married in a touching ceremony at St Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado, on Sunday.
Nurses and medical staff watched the 26-year-old exchange vows with her boyfriend Jimmy New at the hospital chapel.
While there was no wedding dress, Ms Taylor wore a T-shirt with the word 'bride' written across the front.
Her wheelchair was decorated with pink balloons and her nine-year-old son handed over a bouquet of flowers before his mother was taken into the chapel.
Mr New decided to propose after Ms Taylor had spent a particularly difficult week in the ICU unit, he told 9News.
Doctors had informed Mr New that the brain tumour his girlfriend had been battling since last July had spread to her spinal fluid.
'I came in and lowered the bed down, so that I could get down on a knee, and do it the right way - and I asked her to marry me,' he said.
After some convincing, his future wife said yes.
'There's nobody I would rather spend the rest of my life with than the woman sitting right next to me,' said Mr New before the ceremony
The couple met in February 2010. Later that year, in July, Ms Taylor was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer.
She underwent multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation but several months ago was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
After her experience, Ms Taylor started a non-profit charity called the Hope for Heather Foundation.

There aren’t too many women who reach their sporting peak by eating takeaways and fried chicken – and tipping the scales at a mighty 32 stone.
In fact, the British female ‘team’ currently has just one member – 6ft mother of three Sharran Alexander.
Since 46-year-old Miss Alexander, of London, began competing six years ago, she has won gold medals across the globe.
But so low-profile is her sport in the UK that there is no official support and she is forced to go to competitions alone.
And she relies on friends to keep her company as she trains – which involves building stamina by swimming and walking. Not to mention eating 5,000 calories a day of her favourite Caribbean food (the recommended intake for women is 2,000).
Miss Alexander, who also works as a childminder, first joined the British sumo team for a television show to find four women to compete in the World Championships.
But being the only one left hasn’t dented her enthusiasm. After her marriage broke up eight years ago, she says wrestling has given her fresh confidence to look for love: ‘I used to be ashamed of my size. But after taking up sumo I learned to love my body.’
She added: 'I love being tall but when you’re trying to start a relationship it’s the hardest thing to find someone who’s taller than me.
'When I’m with a man who is smaller than me I don’t feel like I’m the woman I want to be.
'When I go out with friends I get chatted up by younger men who love big women.
'I really love the attention.'
In January Sharran will travel to Japan to train with the Japanese women’s sumo team.

Natalie Terry, 28 was jailed for 18 months after leaving her daughter to fend for herself for five days.

A six-year-old girl was left home alone in a freezing flat for five days with nothing to eat but Monster Munch, yoghurt and drinking water a court has heard.
The girl's mother, Natalie Terry, 28, was jailed today following the child cruelty case that heard the girl eventually knocked on the door of a neighbour's house in Dartord, Kent.
Shaking and sobbing hysterically, she told them 'mum has left me five days and has not come back'.
When she was arrested at the sparsely furnished flat that was extremely cold and had no carpets, Terry said to police 'I neglected my daughter. End of'.
There were cat's faeces on the floor and the kitchen was dirty with little food. The only luxury was a flat screen TV.
Terry's neighbours contacted police after the girl turned up on their doorstep. When Terry finally returned, she asked where her daughter was after being told she was with police she said: 'I will not get her back.'
Prosecutor Peter Forbes told Maidstone Crown Court that Terry had said to police that she had been working nights at a shop in Woolwich and had tried to get home before the girl woke up.
'I am doing everything I can to earn money and keep my job', she said.
However, it has not been made clear where Terry actually was during the five-day ordeal.
The girl told police that she had got dressed for school and waited for her mother to return. However, when she did not come back, she took off her uniform and watched TV instead.
Throughout her five-day ordeal in November 2010, all she had to eat were Monster Munch crisps and yoghurt.
Mr Forbes told the court: 'She said when she realised she was on her own, it made her feel sad.'
But he added: 'There is no suggestion she was locked in.'
Terry pleaded guilty to child cruelty and admitted that she had left her daughter alone on previous occasions.
The child is now being looked after by her grandparents and has been seeing her mother under supervised contact.
The court heard that the schoolgirl could feel blame for her mother's 18-month prison sentence, but Judge Martin Joy said it was deeply troubling that the girl was taking responsibility for her mother's actions.
As he rejected calls for the mother to be spared jail, Judge Joy said there must have been have been an element of danger to the child in abandoning her for so long.

Hundreds of visitors to the remote Andaman Islands, north of the Equator in the Indian Ocean, queue up each day at dawn to drive through a jungle reserve set aside for the Jarawa tribe.

They then toss scraps of food to the half-naked natives, who only started making contact with the outside world in the late 1990s, and command them to dance

The 403 tribe members should, in theory, be protected by strict laws on the Indian-run island. A sign at the gate to the 'enclosure' states: 'Don’t give any eatables to the Jarawas.

'Don’t indulge in photography, videography. Otherwise you will be liable for legal action including seizure of camera.'

But tourists can pay touts £350 to take part in the convoy, with local police taking a £200 cut and turning a blind eye to the exploitation.

Visitors are regularly seen throwing bananas and biscuits to tribe's people waiting at the side of the track. Similar scenes are seen across Britain as people feed animals in a zoo.

Photojournalist Gethin Chamberlain uncovered the tour, which is not advertised but sold under the pretext of a visit to local caves, in the islands' capital Port Blair.

Nelson Mandela's grandson and chosen political heir has defied a legal ban by taking a second wife, despite not being divorced from his first wife.
South African MP Mandla Mandela ignored a court order taken out by his first wife to marry Swazi princess Nodiyala Mbali Makhathini on Christmas Eve in rural Eastern Cape province.
Nelson Mandela's charismatic grandson, 37, had wed his first wife, Tando Mabunu-Mandela, during a civil ceremony in 2004, but has since sought to have the marriage annulled.
She's refused and in fact taken out court proceedings to stop him remarrying, which could be legal South African law.
She did this after he wed a French speaking teenage beauty from Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean.
The action meant Mrs Mabunu-Mandela had her estranged husband's 2010 marriage to Anais Grimaud declared illegal on the grounds of contempt of court.
A sheriff last week seized assets worth 100,000 rands (£7,600) from Mandla after he failed to pay maintenance to his first wife pending their divorce that has been lagging since 2009.
But Mandela this time defied a court order from his first wife when he wed Mbali Makhathini, reigniting the debate in South Africa over polygamy and cohabitation law.

Mr Hayes said: 'Both Mandela and his new wife are in contempt of court. They ignored a court order.
'Mandla should focus on getting divorced successfully rather than marrying more wives.'
Mandela's apparent third marriage is the latest bout of controversy to surround the South African icon's grandson in recent years.
In June 2009 he was been accused of selling the television rights to his grandfather's funeral for £225,000.
A family member claimed Mandla Mandela has been scheming to arrange exclusive coverage of the event with South African state broadcaster SABC.
Mandla is one of 266 chiefs heading the 2.6-million-strong Thembu branch of the Xhosa nation.
He was made an MP in 2009 and immediately appointed to the parliamentary committee for rural development and land reform.

Peter and Abbey Crouch are ‘distraught’ after being burgled at their new £4.5million mansion.
The England and Stoke City striker and his wife discovered the break-in at their home in Prestbury, Cheshire, on Tuesday evening after returning from a day out.
The house had been given ‘a pretty untidy going-over’, according to police.

Christmas presents, a watch and a number of rings belonging to Abbey, 25, are believed to be among the items stolen.
The couple’s nine-month-old daughter, Sophia, was staying with Mrs Crouch’s mother at the time.
A close friend of the pair told the Mail: ‘Abbey and Peter must have disturbed the burglars when they heard their car coming up the drive.
'They believe there were several men in the house.’
The couple bought the six-bedroom home - which has a gym, cinema and swimming pool - from ex-England cricketer Andrew Flintoff three months ago.
In fact the Premiership footballer and his wife live just yards from Wayne and Coleen Rooney, and Rio Ferdinand also lives nearby.
A police source said: ‘The couple discovered the break-in after they returned to the house at around 7.20pm on Tuesday night.
‘The house had not been ransacked but had been given a pretty untidy going over and there were several items missing.
‘We have no value on the missing items as yet but it was obviously an unpleasant thing to come home to and police have launched an investigation.'
It is not the first time Peter Crouch has been targeted by burglars - he was raided in 2006 at his previous home in Alderley Edge.

On that occasion raiders targeted the England striker as he played for his country in the Euro 2008 qualifiers.

The couple were issued a final decree of divorce in a Texas court last month - two years after stylist Tina originally filed legal papers.
The couple separated in 2009 after it emerged Mathew - who managed his daughter until earlier this year - had fathered a love child.
Their original divorce filing was dropped last year after both failed to appear in court, leading Tina to file a divorce petition again in August this year.
In court documents, Tina, 57, said the marriage was 'insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities' which 'prevents any reasonable expectation of reconciliation', according to TMZ.com.
Tina's original divorce filing came just a month after it emerged Mathew, 60, had fathered a child with former Scrubs actress Alexsandra White, who was pregnant at the time.
White, 40, gave birth to their son Nixon on February 4 2010 following an 18 month affair with Mathew.
Although he initially denied he was the father, a DNA test later proved otherwise.
In March, Beyonce severed business ties with her father, but insisted she was not estranged from him on a father-daughter level, despite her parents' split.
Mathew had managed Beyonce's career from a teen wannabe to girl group bandmember with Destiny's Child to superstar solo singer.

Celebrating your 18th birthday is a momentous occasion for anyone, but for tiny Jyoti Amge the milestone is even bigger news.
The 2ft teenager is already a mini celebrity in her hometown of Nagpur, India, but is now set for a huge record when she is officially declared the world's smallest woman.
And despite her miniature stature, 61.95cm-tall Jyoti hopes to celebrate being crowned the world's shortest woman by launching a Bollywood movie career.
She took the Guinness World Record from 2ft 3in American Bridgette Jordan, and celebrated her birthday with a teddy bear which loomed over her tiny 24.4in frame.
She measured 7 centimeters (2.76 inches) shorter than the 22-year-old American Bridgette Jordan, who had held the title since September.
A teary-eyed Jyoti, dressed in one of her finest saris, called the honor an 'extra birthday present' and said she felt grateful for being small, as it had brought her recognition.
She also blew out candles on a birthday cake which was comfortably bigger than her.
Even the Guinness World Records book at the ceremony came up to Jyoti's waist.
Jyoti weighs just 12lbs (5.5kg) - only 9lbs more than she did at birth - and has a form of dwarfism call achondroplasia, which stopped her growing after her first birthday.

Budding actress Jyoti, who is set to appear in two Bollywood films next year, told The Sun: 'I want to make people happy.'
As a teenager at school in Nagpur, Jyoti had her own small desk and chair, but said the other students didn't treat her any differently.
She also has to sleep in a specially-made bed and uses utensils that are smaller than average.
This was not Amge's first Guinness record. Until Friday she was considered the world's shortest teenager, but in turning 18 qualified for the new title.
She has grown less than 1cm (0.4in) in the last two years, Guinness said in a statement, and will grow no more due to a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia.
Her teenage title brought the chance for multiple Guinness-sponsored trips to Japan and Italy for tours and meetings with other record holders, she said.

She said she managed to remove parcel tape covering her mouth but was worried the oxygen would run out before she could free herself.
She said: 'It was not easy. I tried to breathe the rest of the oxygen which was left inside the box.'
She sliced through the tape binding her ankles using the ring her alleged attacker had given her, tore at a small hole in the box and finally dug her way to freedom.
She had earlier been shot twice with a 300,000 volt Taser gun by the boyfriend, Marcin Kasprzak, 25, and tied up in her home, Leeds Crown Court heard.
Kasprzak wanted to 'get rid of her' so he could look after their three-year-old son Jakub himself, it was claimed.
Julian Goose QC, defending Kasprzak, said he simply wanted to 'frighten' her. However, Miss Lewandowska insisted she was the victim of a murder plot.
She said the two air holes that enabled her to survive were not left unblocked on purpose, but because Kasprzak was taping the box with her inside in 'a rush'.
After being carried to the wood by Kasprzak and his friend Patryk Borys, 18, she lay in silence until she was sure they had gone.
She then tore at the box until she had managed to get her head through the soil and into the open air. When no one answered her cries for help she renewed her efforts to wriggle free.
'I was very knackered. I had problems tearing the box apart. I was trying to tear the box apart using my shoulders,' she said.
Eventually she succeeded and flagged down a passing motorist. Michelina Lewandowska, 27, yesterday gave further details of her terrifying ordeal in a wood, bound and gagged and encased in a box beneath soil and a heavy branch.

This is the Ugandan aircraft that Africa hopes will thrust it right into the space race.
Constructed amidst the rubble of his mother's backyard, ambitious Chris NSamba believes the African Skyhawk will lead to his continent launching its first astronaut into orbit.
The African Space Research Programme founder has been helped by 600 volunteers in partially achieving the first stage of his dream - the creation of the plane that will penetrate the edge of space by flying at 80,000ft.
And once the African Skyhawk has had a successful test flight sometime next year, the 28-year-old plans to turn his hand to building the continent's first space shuttle.
He firmly believes it will launch in the next 'four to six years'. But given the condition of his project at the moment, he might be advised to buy a gigantic rubber band to help it on its way.
The former astronomy student said: 'It isn't about money, it isn't about competition or pride.
'The mission is about advancement in space technology as a continent and what we can contribute towards that growth.
'We are trying to have Africa participate in the contribution of knowledge into mankind's destiny.'
The cynical may question how NSamba can launch his own space programme without any money, and be entirely reliant on donations.
They may also ask how it can be achieved, seeing as Uganda has no history of space exploration and he is teaching the aspiring astronauts himself.
But he said he was confident the Skyhawk's test flight would take place next year, and he would have a fully fledged space shuttle in operation in 'four to six years'.
He added: 'This is not a one-man mission. We work jointly to achieve goals.
'I have trained my crew (in) advanced astronomy. They are very good at astronomy in regards to calculations and identifications of various space objects.'
And when asked how he plans to simulate zero gravity for training, he said it would be 'easy'.
He added: 'I've got a jet engine on order so I'm planning to build a tunnel, put the engine at one end and when I throw a guy in he'll float in a similar way to how he would in space.'
NSamba, who admits that 'one time or another every successful scientists has been called a madman' has been toiling away in his mother's backyard, in the Kampala suburb of Ntinda, for three years.
But despite the challenges he faces, he said was confident his space shuttle, dubbed The Dynacraft, would be ready sooner rather than later.
And he cited funding from foreigners, and the promise of cash from the Ugandan government, as markers to their ongoing success.
He said: 'It will first operate in Earth's lower orbit then advance with time. We might not have money in our system but we do get our homework done.'

He issued a hard-hitting statement blaming the split on forces controlled by his political rival, Zimbabwe's despotic president Robert Mugabe, 87.
Ever since news of Mr Tsvangirai's marriage leaked out, the couple have been stalked by journalists and photographers.
Newspapers controlled by Robert Mugabe's ZANU-PF party have been particularly assiduous in chronicling the fledgling union.
They had taken particular delight in detailing its alleged problems, including the claim that Tembo has tried to kill herself and that it was a shotgun marriage prompted by her pregnancy.
Mr Tsvangirai blamed his lightening-quick divorce on this media attention - which he said had been driven by 'an active political hand'.
'Since the day I married, everything has been played in the press and I have become an innocent bystander', he said.
'I have become a spectator and things are happening too fast, on camera and without my knowledge

'This has led me to conclude that there is a greater and thicker plot around this issue which has undermined my confidence in this relationship.'

He went on to say: 'The marriage has been hijacked and there is an apparent active political hand that is now driving the processes.
'State security agents have also weighed in to force and direct proceedings which has resulted in everything regarding this relationship now taking place in camera.
'Everything is so well choreographed. The intention is clear: to inflict maximum damage on my person and character for political gain.'
As President of the Movement for Democratic Change, Morgan Tsvangirai is the leading opposition political figure inside Zimbabwe.
He has been repeatedly beaten and arrested for his political activity against Robert Mugabe's regime.
However, following the disputed 2008 election, which independent election monitors said he won - but in which Mugabe claimed victory - he was persuaded to join his rival in a unity government.
Since then, the two men have fought a bitter cold war within the government in which Mugabe has been accused of trying to discredit his Prime Minister.
Mr Tsvangirai's first wife, Susan, with whom he had six children, died in 2009 in a car accident, which Tsvangirai survived.
Robert Mugabe, 87, has ruled Zimbabwe ever since it independence from Britain in 1980.
Having once been the fertile 'bread basket' of Africa, however, the country is now one of the world's poorest countries.
Three-quarters of the population live in extreme poverty on less than £1 a day and over half of the work force is unemployed.
In 2008 hyperinflation in the country reached the astronomical figure of 230 million per cent - meaning that paper money became worthless almost as soon as it was printed. The former British colony now uses US dollars.
Following the disputed 2008 election, it is now ruled by a coalition of Robert Mugabe's Zanu-PF and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change.
However, the arrangement is marred by political infighting and is widely considered to be ineffective.

So it's no wonder the model is baffled by eating habits in the modelling world - an industry she joined soon after moving to London, aged 14.
Speaking of her job as a model, Wek said: 'It's an awful feeling, being hungry.
'In this world, I found, many people were hungry too, but for different reasons.
'They wanted their bodies to look a certain way, whether their bodies were meant to or not. They chose not to eat.'

Fernando Brazier, 28, left a note at the front desk of the hotel, where he had spent the first night with his new wife, telling her where his body could be found.
He was then seen leaving the Radisson Hotel in New Rochelle, New York around 9am on Sunday and climbing into a taxi.
He was discovered at the bottom of the Harlem River near Roberto Clemente State Park around 3pm, according to police sources.
Calls to the coroner went unanswered today. A cause of death has yet to be confirmed but it is believed there were no signs of foul play.
His new bride, 26-year-old Trudian Hay, identified her husband's body with his mother Paula Brazier-Weeks.

Her family described the young mother, a college graduate, as 'distraught'.
Mr Brazier's sister Shawna Weeks told the New York Post: 'He said [in the note] he couldn't take it anymore, and to take care of the kids.
'He left his ring in the envelope.'
Police sources believe that the man leapt from a building or the promenade behind it at 55 Richman Plaza in the Bronx.
The couple had been together since they were teenagers and had two daughters aged five and two.
Mr Brazier was reportedly suffering from depression for several months and had counselling with his fiancee.
Ms Weeks also told the Post: 'He would tell me that Trudy was a good person [but] he didn't want to marry her; he was feeling like he was pressured.'
Mr Brazier, who worked as a night security guard and was studying to be a nurse, had divorced parents and wanted to give his children a stable home.
During their wedding reception on Saturday evening, relatives said Mr Brazier looked happy and not at all distressed as he danced with his wife and daughters.
The following morning Mr Brazier said he was 'going out for a walk'. When he didn't return his wife was told by a receptionist that he had left in a taxi and passed her the note.

A 'fake doctor' suspected of injecting a woman's bottom with cement, super glue and tyre sealant to give her a more 'shapely' rear has been arrested.

The cocktail injected into the woman's buttocks included cement

Transgendered woman Oneal Ron Morris, who by his own picture appears to have undergone the 'butt-boosting' procedure himself, is accused of administering the potentially lethal shots to at least one victim.
The 30-year-old, who police say is a man but appears to look like a woman, was detained in Florida yesterday for the alleged incident in May 2010.
Miami Gardens Police Department Sgt William Bamford said Morris first met with the as-yet unidentified victim to discuss the procedure.
He said: 'They agreed on the price of $700, which was intended for cosmetic purposes.'
But instead, police say the victim was given a series of injections containing cement, mineral oil and Fix-A-Flat tyre inflator and sealant
The incision was sealed with super glue. Shortly after the surgery was carried out, she went on to suffer 'severe complications'.
Bamford told WPLG: 'A short time later, she develops very serious pains, abdomen, throughout her body. She knows something is wrong.'
He said the woman visited two local hospitals, before heading to Tampa General Hospital, where she received treatment
She had developed an infection of drug-resistant bug MRSA at the wound and also developed pneumonia, but refused to reveal how it had happened.
Doctors at the hospital, worried it was the work of an unlicensed practitioner, reported the case to the Florida Department of Health.
But by the time they started to investigate, the victim had left the area.
Morris was eventually arrested in North Lauderdale in March 2011. He has been charged with practising medicine without a license and causing bodily harm.
The alleged incident is the latest in a long line of instances where women have suffered complications following illegal bottom enhancement procedures.

A Mexican girl has become a mother at the age of just 10, according to reports.
The youngster arrived at a hospital in the city of Puebla, suffering from life-threatening complications in her 31-week pregnancy, including seizures.
She gave birth by Caesarean section to a boy weighing 3.3lb at the Women's Hospital in the city, 60 miles south-east of Mexico City.
Her premature son is now said to be in intensive care following a bout of pneumonia, but officials said his young mother visits the baby every day to breastfeed, according to the New York Daily News.
The paper said the hospital revealed the baby boy is in a good condition considering his premature birth and the mother is recovering well after first coming to the centre on October 22.
However, hospital director Rogelio Gonzalez told UpFrontNewswire that the birth had been reported to the state's Attorney General's Office, which is investigating whether the girl could have been raped and who the father is.
Mexican state laws prevent young mothers having abortions unless they can prove they were the victim of sexual assault.
The legal age of consent is 12 and women who have abortions in Puebla face a fine or prison sentence if they are unable to prove they were sexually abused. However, the laws are currently under review.
The shocking case is not the first of a young girl giving birth in Mexico.
In August last year, an 11-year-old known only as Amalia had a child two weeks prematurely after being raped repeatedly by her stepfather when she was 10 years old.
When the girl’s mother discovered her daughter was pregnant, she had a nervous breakdown and demanded to know how it happened, said local aid workers.
Amalia told her mother she had been raped by her stepfather and the attack was immediately reported to the police.

Visiting the kingdom, it appears outwardly calm. The shops seem prosperous, the streets spotlessly tidy and there are none of the wretched townships that scar neighbouring states.

The sun was a burning red orb as it slid over the horizon behind purple-blooming jacaranda trees, while a gentle breeze rippled through lush sugar-cane fields on the king's estate.
We had just passed impala grazing in the bush and gangs of turkey scavenging for food beside the road. All around was the buzz of excitement as families headed into a music festival at Simunye Country Club.
Children, their faces painted in Spiderman patterns and wearing feather-rimmed tiaras, laughed as they ran around the funfair. Students sat in circles, taking swigs from cans of beer.
Everywhere people were smartly dressed, smiling and friendly. It felt timeless, the mood one of gentle enjoyment. It was difficult to believe we were in a country on the edge of revolt against the last absolute monarch in Africa.
For such peaceful scenes are no longer the typical image of this tiny nation that was, for so many years, such an oasis of stability surrounded by civil war, unrest and apartheid that it styled itself 'the Switzerland of Africa'.
Instead the middle-aged monarch — famed around the world for his leopardskin loincloths, his 13 wives and traditional ceremonies at which thousands of bare-breasted teenage virgins vie for his attention — rules over a land in turmoil.
The British-educated King Mswati III seems increasingly like a throwback to a medieval monarch, a profligate potentate trying — and failing — to keep the modern world at bay like an African Canute.
He clings onto antiquated traditions that promote rampant promiscuity in a land ripped apart by Aids, where elderly princes take child brides under the cloak of culture, corruption is rife and fawning courtiers feud for favours as their country falls apart.
Swaziland is classified as a middle-income country. When I remarked to one activist that the nation was poor, he reprimanded me. 'We are not a poor country — just badly run,' he said. 'I have been to Togo and Ethiopia and seen really poor countries.'
But Swaziland is effectively bankrupt. Already, two-thirds of its people live beneath the poverty line and 40 per cent are unemployed.
Now state spending has been slashed, with street lights switched off, schools closed, benefits stopped, university places cut, courts in chaos, prisoners' food reduced and even the national football team facing withdrawal from the World Cup.
Incredibly, one in four of those people I passed on the Swazi streets is HIV positive. And these are the official levels — it may be even worse: tests carried out on pregnant women revealed infection rates of 41 per cent, while more than half of factory workers were found to have the virus.
As a result, nearly one-third of children are orphaned and life expectancy has crashed from 60 to just 33 — which, as one person pointed out, made me an old man there.
Everyone you talk to, whatever their age, has lost scores of friends and family to the scourge, and funerals, with their all-night vigils, are commonplace.
Such shocking statistics make the King's polygamy, promiscuity and profligacy seem lethally irresponsible. Little wonder one of the world's oldest monarchies is fighting for survival.

'Sometimes I wish I had a bomb and I would throw it at the King,' said one of the young organisers of protests against him.
'We can't go on living like this. It hurts so much to see the King wasting all our money while we have no work.'

King Mswati ascended the throne 25 years ago straight after leaving Sherborne, the Dorset public school. He was an unexpected choice to succeed his father, the revered Sobhuza II, who had reigned for nearly 83 years — the longest documented rule of any monarch in world history — and oversaw the country's independence from Britain in 1968.

It's been less than a week since Kim Kardashian pulled the trigger and filed for divorce from husband of 72 days Kris Humphries, and apparently she's still very conflicted over the decision. So, she flew out to Minnesota to talk to her soon-to-be ex -- and the pastor that married them.

She arrived and a bodyguard landed at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport at around 5:30am local time Sunday. Apparently getting on a plane was a last-minute decision after deciding she owed it to Humphries to talk to him face-to-face, without reality TV cameras in the mix.

But, don't get too excited: Sources say this isn't exactly a reconciliation, or even an attempt at one, but this is definitely a sign that things aren't set in stone just yet. The two will reportedly talk to the pastor that married them about their relationship and feelings. Word has it she's looking for closure for both parties.

Three-year-old Shylah Silbery had to fend for herself for two days after her mother died unexpectedly in their home in New Zealand

A three-year-old girl survived for two days on eating cheese and leftover lasagne after her mother died suddenly leaving her locked in her home.
Shylah Silbery, from Wellington, New Zealand, also hugged her favourite toy - a teddy bear named Possum - as she waited alone in the house near her mother's body.
She was rescued when 28-year-old Lauren Silbery's relatives alerted the authorities when they had not heard from her for two days.
Police who went to the property managed to coax Shylah to drag a coffee table to the door so she could climb up and unlock it.
She told them: 'Mummy won't wake up.'
Lauren was found face down next to her bed. Her daughter had been able to drink milk and feed herself with whatever she could find in the fridge.
Shylah spent several days in hospital recovering from dehydration and urine burns before attending her mother's funeral.
The child's uncle Pete Silbery, 24, said: 'I can only imagine her in there for that long, trying to wake Mum up.'
'She's doing okay now. She's still bubbly. When we lowered the coffin into the grave at the cemetery, though, she pointed at it and said, "Mummy's in there". It was pretty heartbreaking.'
Mr Silbery spoke every night to his sister, but he nad his mother grew so concerned after failing to reach her for two days they rang a friend who lived nearby.
The friend went to the house and saw Shylah inside but no sign of her mother.
The dead woman's mother, Heather, said: 'Lauren and I were very close - she would ring me every morning.
'One day I was in the garden and that afternoon at about four o'clock... her brother Peter and I said, 'Well, we haven't heard from Lauren'.

'So we got a friend to go around there and [the grandchild] had come to the cat door, but Lauren hadn't, so I dialled 111.'But she said she knew her daughter was dead the instant she heard that neighbours couldn;t contact her.
'Lauren wouldn't have done anything silly,' she said. 'She loved Shylah so much and was a devoted mum. But I knew exactly what had happened. It's a mother's instinct.'
She added: 'Her daughter was everything to her. She was the type of person who has a nice way of bringing people together.'
Officers saw the three-year-old inside the house and taught her how to open the door by getting her to stand on a coffee table.

Kim Kardashian has spoken out in the wake of the bombshell news she is divorcing Kris Humphries, insisting she had hoped the marriage would 'last forever'.
The 31-year-old reality star said it was 'not an easy decision' after filing for divorce from NBA star Kris, 26, after just 72 days of marriage on the grounds of 'irreconcilable differences'.
In a statement to E! - which screens her TV show - Kim said: 'After careful consideration, I have decided to end my marriage. I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision.
'I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don't work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best.'
Kris, meanwhile, says he is devastated by Kim's decision, with TMZ claiming he only learnt she was divorcing him this morning.
'I'm committed to this marriage and everything this covenant represents,' he said in a statement via his representative
manoeuvre to cash in at a time when Kim's star had reached its zenith.
Today Kim took to Twitter, but rather than mentioning anything about her marital breakdown cynically plugged her new boutique Kardashian Khaos, which opens tomorrow at The Mirage hotel in Las Vegas.
The date of Kim and Kris's separation is listed as today (October 31), divorce papers logged with the Superior Court of California show.
She has hired top divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, who has dealt with the likes of Britney Spears, Maria Shriver, Angelina Jolie and Ryan Reynolds.
Television network E! - which screens the Kardashian reality show - released a statement about the divorce.

Kim Kardashian and her husband Kris Humphries was apparently getting divorce paperwork ready -- 72 days into her marriage to Kris Humphries. TMZ reports the reality star filed the paperwork today, and Ryan Seacrest confirmed the news on Twitter.

"Yes @kimkardashian is filing for divorce this morning," he wrote. "I touched base with her, getting a statement in just a few mins"

Rumor has it she'll not seek an annulment, and instead will cite irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split. The date of separation will reportedly be listed as today, October 31. Happy Halloween!

Sources say one of the main reasons for the split is that Kardashian will never move to Minnesota, which is where Humphries wants to settle down. He's from the area and apparently thought she was onboard with moving to the Midwest eventually. She's not. They reportedly got caught up in the wedding planning and didn't really hash out their long-term plan until after they got hitched.

And, insiders say Mr. Humphries "doesn't believe" in divorce, and that he's "bummed" and had no idea she was filing until today. Harsh.

Libya's prime minister Mahmoud Jibril this afternoon confirmed the former dictator was dead.
Gaddafi's eldest son Saif was yesterday said to have been shot in the leg during a firefight and taken to hospital - with some, as yet unconfirmed, reports suggesting he has since died.
His other son Mutassim has been confirmed to have died in today's battle.
